D. GLENN MARTYN started training dogs professionally in 1965 – training for TV and movies, obedience, show, field, police service, search and rescue and tracking in California and Montana. His unique experience in many fields of dog training allows him draw on a multitude of techniques and methods. The most successful trainers are not limited to only one method or one type of training. They know how and when to modify things to better fit you and your dog’s needs and circumstances.

In 1972 Glenn earned a BA in psychology (with high honors) from the University of Montana (followed by graduate studies), and in 1986 a secondary level teaching certificate (psychology/biology).

In 1976 Glenn founded Firewind Training Kennels – Western Montana’s premier boarding and training facility. At Firewind he and his staff have trained dogs for Police Service, Field, Obedience, and as Service Dogs for people with disabilities.

Missoula’s Community Medical Center (Rehabilitation Center) invited Glenn to help establish PawsAbilities (Canine Partners for People with Disabilities) in 1987.  PawsAbilities trained and placed Hearing and Mobility Service Dogs throughout the Western United States.

Glenn has lectured at National Conferences on service dogs (Delta Society, APDT), dog problem solving (Delta Society), and puppy aptitude testing (Delta Society). He worked for 7 years as a consultant for Delta Society (now Pet Partners) on their Service Dog Education System.

Presentations to Assistance Dog organizations, humane societies, sheriff’s departments, search and rescue, and government organizations have included such diverse topics as: canine genetics, breeding systems, puppy selection, client selection, search and rescue tactics, dog bite prevention, and analyzing/solving dog behavior problems.

Known in Western Montana as “The Dog Man,” Glenn provided dog-related information for eight years through the

“Hunter’s Breakfast” morning radio show.

In September 1999 Glenn joined the San Francisco SPCA Hearing Dog Program as their new Training Coordinator, supervising training and kennel staff operations. Glenn became Director of the program in June 2005. In 2008 The Hearing Dog Program left the SF/SPCA to become an independent non-profit. Glenn continues to direct the program, spending time in both California and Montana.

Former staff, volunteers and graduates of the original SF/SPCA Hearing Dog Program decided to carry on the program’s mission of training and placing Hearing Dogs with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Therefore, in June of 2008 they organized a new Hearing Dog Program, also located in San Francisco. Glenn is the Executive Director of the successor organization.

From June 2008 to May 2010 Glenn served as Dog Training Director at Bergin College of Canine Studies in Santa Rosa, California, supervising and instructing staff and students in Service Dog training and handling. He taught classes at the Associate, Bachelor, and Master levels.

Glenn continues to present workshops and seminars throughout the United States and to work as a consultant on projects for dog-related organizations. He provides dog training and behavioral consultation for a select group of dog owners and trainers.
